Celiac Disease: Symptoms, Causes, and Cure

In recent years, more and more people are being diagnosed with celiac disease. Many people aren’t familiar with the disease and know very little about it.

What causes celiac disease? This is a disease of the digestive system. Doctors are not sure as to what the exact cause is. They do know that something causes the body to overreact to gluten. They do know that the celiac damages the villi along the walls of the small intestine impairing the small intestine to work properly. This damage reduces the small intestine’s ability to absorb nutrients for good health.

Doctors do know that this disease runs in families so if someone in your family has been diagnosed with the disease there are chances that you could get the disease, too.

Celiac disease is difficult to diagnose it does not have any common, typical symptoms. It has symptoms similar to other illnesses. These similarities make it hard to distinguish between celiac disease and other illnesses. People with celiac disease can have intermittent diarrhea, abdominal pain, and bloating. They could also be anemic, often have an upset stomach, have dental disorders, weight loss, and foul-smelling or grayish stools.

Currently, there isn’t any cure for this disease. However, if you have been diagnosed with this disease, take heart. You can control it by controlling what you eat. Avoid eating food containing wheat, rye, semolina, graham flour, farina, and barley. This generally means no breads, pastas, cakes, cookies, and pies, and breakfast cereals. You can eat corn and cornmeal, rice, fruits, vegetables, and meats that aren’t batter coated.
